What does an evaluation entail?

Infant Evaluation (Ages 0-1):
An infant evaluation is a 60-minute appointment to assess the function of the child’s lips, tongue, airway, cheeks, jaw, and nervous system. Ultimately, the therapist is seeking to understand how a dysfunction of any of these may result in hinderance to the baby’s eating, sleeping, breathing, or growth. The evaluation begins with a review of pregnancy and birth history along with current parent concerns. The assessment involves observing the infant’s whole body movement patterns during back, side, and tummy time. We evaluate oral rest posture, reflexes, and motor patterns, as well as assess feeding and lactation if relevant. A thorough examination of tongue, lip, and buccal ties is conducted. The session concludes with therapeutic recommendations and demonstrations of techniques to practice at home.

Toddler Evaluation (Ages 1-4):
During toddler evaluations, we review the birth and medical history while the child plays and gets comfortable in the office. If an articulation evaluation is needed, it involves the child naming pictures from a book while the examiner records how each word is articulated. We assess oral motor skills, including the tongue, lips, cheeks, and jaw, and check for any tongue, lip, and cheek ties. The evaluation also includes an assessment of oral motor skills for chewing and swallowing, with a snack and a drink provided. We then discuss overall impressions and recommendations for therapy. These appointments are designed to be enjoyable for the child, focusing on building rapport and ensuring the experience doesn’t feel like a typical doctor’s visit.

Child/Adult Evaluation (Ages 5+):
Evaluations for adults and children over 5 years old last 90 minutes and provide a holistic assessment of the individual’s needs. The evaluation includes a comprehensive review of the health history, and an in-depth assessment of the lips, tongue, cheeks, and jaw function. We also evaluate breathing patterns, posture, eating and drinking abilities, and articulation if necessary. Following the evaluation, patients receive an extremely detailed report outlining our findings and recommendations, ensuring a clear understanding of their needs and the next steps in their care.
What do therapy sessions entail?
Infant: Infant therapy sessions focus on enhancing developmental milestones and addressing feeding challenges. Each session involves hands-on techniques and specialized exercises tailored to the infant’s needs. Therapy may include assessments of oral motor skills and movement patterns, as well as targeted interventions to support feeding and overall development. Parents will receive detailed instructions and recommendations to practice at home, ensuring consistent progress between sessions.
Child: Child therapy sessions are customized to focus on areas such as strength, mobility, awareness, or speech. Each session includes engaging exercises tailored to the child’s needs, with a focus on making the activities both effective and enjoyable. Parents will receive detailed instructions for daily homework that reinforces the skills learned during therapy.
Adult: Therapy sessions are tailored to address specific needs such as strength, mobility, awareness, or speech. Patients will receive personalized exercises designed to target these areas, which they are expected to complete as daily homework between sessions. In many cases, therapy will encompass all three areas to ensure comprehensive progress and effective results.
