An infant evaluation is a 60-minute appointment to assess the function of the child\u2019s lips, tongue, airway, cheeks, jaw, and nervous system. Ultimately, the therapist is seeking to understand how a dysfunction of any of these may result in hinderance to the baby\u2019s eating, sleeping, breathing, or growth. The evaluation begins with a review of pregnancy and birth history along with current parent concerns. The assessment involves observing the infant’s whole body movement patterns during back, side, and tummy time. We evaluate oral rest posture, reflexes, and motor patterns, as well as assess feeding and lactation if relevant. A thorough examination of tongue, lip, and buccal ties is conducted.
